Since the discovery of the hole in the ozone layer, even sunlight has been suspect as far as human health is concerned. For years, excessive exposure to sunlight has been taboo especially for fair skinned people. It was thought that over exposure would contribute dramatically to incidence of skin cancer. Most of the body’s vitamin D supply is generated by the skin’s exposure to UVB rays. Amazingly, recent research has discovered that sunlight is good for health.

Imagine that, who knew!

Of course I am being facetious however this is an example of how far out of touch modern science can be when it comes to common sense and health. Of course too much sun can lead to increased incidence of skin cancer. Rather than having people stay out of the sun, why not increase beta carotene and other protective factors in the skin through diet.

Vitamin D is now believed to play an important role in regulating the production of cells; this control is missing in cancerous cells.  Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight; new research suggests vitamin D stops overproduction of cells which is the primary characteristic of cancer.

The primary concern of vitamin D deficiency in the past has been limited to a decrease the absorption of calcium from foods of the end result of soft bones in children and adults. It is estimated that up to 80% of the population is vitamin D deficient.
